Timing: Bronze Fennel can be sown in the spring as soon as the soil warms. Soaking your seeds for a day or two before sowing will ensure better germination. You can grow fennel outdoors, as long as it is safe from frost.
Growing: September / October is the perfect time to collect the seed heads and then extract the seeds. When the seeds are ripe the old flower heads turn a grey-brown colour and dry out. This plant grows best in between 60 and 70 degrees. Bronze Fennel prefers full sun and can handle partial shade. Sowing: It is best to sow these seeds 1cm (½”) deep, a few seeds in each spot you want a plant to grow. You should space them 30cm (12″) apart. Try to grow fennel in a sunny position, and in loamy soil. Harvesting: Whole flower stalks can be cut off and placed seed-side down in a paper bag or cloth bag. For a few weeks, hang the bag in a cool, dry place to allow the seed-heads to totally dry out. Shaking the stalks inside the bag or rubbing the seeds from the stalks over a towel will totally remove the seeds, making it ready to use. |
