Crocosmia
Crocosmia is a group of perennial plants in the iris family (Iridaceae) known for their showy, brightly-coloured flowers. The plants have long, narrow, green leaves, and the flowers are arranged in spikes or clusters at the top of tall, leafless stems. The flowers come in a vibrant range including red, orange, yellow and pink.
Crocosmia is a plant that is also called "montbretia." It originally comes from some parts of Africa and is now a popular plant for gardens. It's also named after a French botanist named Montbret! |
Timing: Crocosmia should be planted in the spring after the danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed up a bit. This will give the seeds enough time to grow roots before the hot summer months. If you live in a cooler climate, you can plant them in the fall too, as long as you do it at least 6-8 weeks before the first frost. This gives the seeds time to settle in before winter.
Sowing: Find a spot in your garden with well-draining soil and plenty of sun or partial shade. Dig a hole that is about 3-4 inches deep, and place the Crocosmia seeds in it. Cover the seeds with soil and water it thoroughly. Crocosmia can also be grown in containers, using a potting mix that is well-draining. Place the container in a spot that gets plenty of sun, and water the soil regularly to keep it moist. Growing: Choose a sunny or partially shaded spot with well-draining soil. Plant the seeds in the spring, water them well and keep the soil consistently moist. Fertilize them monthly, and cut down the foliage in the fall. Mulch the area around the plants to protect the seeds from the winter cold. Repeat these steps each year for healthy and blooming crocosmia plants. Crocosmia has tall spikes of flowers that provide a vertical accent to garden beds and can add colour and interest to mixed plantings. They can also attract hummingbirds and butterflies with their bright flowers, which can help to pollinate nearby plants. |
