Orach
Orach brings a burst of colour and flavour to salad mixes, and it can be grown in containers. Plant Red Orach seeds at nearly any time of the year for fresh greens in just over a month, or micro-greens in three weeks. Orach is quite similar to spinach in flavour, with a slightly saltier taste, but it is much more heat tolerant than spinach. |
Timing: If starting indoors, seed them in January in preparation for transplant outside in the spring, or sow seeds anytime from March to August. They can be sown every 3 weeks from March to September for a continuous harvest. Starting earlier when it is warm is recommended, and in colder months they should be given protection from frost.
Sowing: Sprinkle the seeds over moist, prepared soil, then barely cover them with a thin layer of soil. Try your best to space the seeds 1cm apart to avoid over-planting them. Growing: If growing in containers, ensure that the container is at least 10cm deep, and the wider the better. The soil should be kept well-fertilized using organic fertilizers and compost. Fish-based fertilizers with a mix of kelp may also be used to provide a boost of nutrients to enhance growth. Harvesting: Pick individual leaves as needed, or cut the plant down to 2-5 cm from the ground once they are 10-15 cm tall. |
