Redbor Kale

Picture
This firm, curly, dark red kale is an astounding add-on to salad blends. Cut it up and put into salads, or use whole leaves in smoothies and a variety of recipes for a nutrient-packed meal.

It is easy to grow and matures in 50 days.
The plants can grow up to 45-60 cm (18-24”) tall and parades a dark mahogany red throughout. Its vigour and cold-resistant nature makes it perfect for the west coast climate, and
the leaves get even darker after frost.

Timing: It prefers the cooler seasons with as much sun exposure as possible. Directly sow the seeds between March to July for a summer to winter harvest.

Or, sow seeds indoors late January to early February, begin to harden them outside after 5-6 weeks, and transplant outside in the spring where the plants can mature.
Sow: Sow seeds directly or 3-4 seeds in a pot 5mm deep, then thin them out to keep the strongest plants. Space the grown plants around 45-60 cm apart in rows 75 cm apart.

Growing: Kale likes well drained, fertile soil rich in organic matter with consistent and plentiful moisture. Use organic fertilizer to supplement underneath the surface of the soil upon transplanting plants to ensure they receive the nutrients they need.

Harvesting: Pick leaves from the bottom up as you need from mature plants.
